High Altitude Balloon Project

To The Edge of Space & Back Again!

In the name of science...

Have you ever wanted to go into space?

Well, most of us have dreamt of that opportunity all our lives, and now we are working on the next best thing without going through astronaut training:

  • Launching a Scientific High Altitude Ballooon
    65,000 feet into space!

For 99.9% of the world's population, we will never physically get into space, but can build something with our hands that can be launched into space, from right here in little old County Meath.

We're designing, building and launching a payload into space using nothing but "air" to power it up into the outer-edge of space 65,000 feet above the earth, where the payload will burst and return safely to earth with a parachute.

There are a lot of hoops to jump through to conduct such an experiment here in Ireland, and we are working diligently with the authorities to ensure we comply with airspace laws and safety, and local authoirty by-laws.

"This is the closest I will most likely ever get to space, and even though I won't physically be there, my hands will have literally touched the payload and its contents, so it's literally like I'm touching space with my own hands!"

Many others have inspired us

As you can see in the video above, we are following in the footsteps of many others that have done this before us.

We are subject ot Irish Aviation Authority rules of operation and the Civil Aviation Authority in Northern Ireland should our payload happen to cross into UK Airspace.

BVAS Payload Design Summary:

This HAB Project is not only about sending a balloon into space, it's about science, so onboard the payload for the BVAS HAB, there will be a number of instruments to conduct some scientific experiments.

  1. Measure Pollutants in the skies above County Meath
  2. Measure Weather and Gases on its ascent
  3. Conduct Solar Powered Camera Experiments
  4. Instrumentation to prove earth is not flat
  5. GPS and Additional Tracking
  6. Cosmic Ray Detection Experiments

These are all science instruments that will sit inside our payload, which will be built by us. So, get involved and be part of a local team that 'goes into space'!
